McAuliffe to Conduct Sustainability Summit On June 28, the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) will be hosting its first-ever Sustainability Summit. DCPS is inviting both local community and state officials, along with DCPS teachers, administrators, and parents to discuss the city’s latest efforts to become a more sustainable school system. The summit will feature Mayor Muriel Bowser, Gov. Terry McAuliffe, DCPS Chancellor Kaya Henderson, Chief of Schools Lonnie Blakeny, and other dignitaries. According to a DCPS press release, topics will include school safety and security, the District’s efforts to reduce student exposure to lead and to make the city greener and more eco-friendly, as well as plans to strengthen DCPS’s STEM programs. The event will also focus on the city’s commitment to providing high-quality instruction for children. From the release: “There are many sustainability initiatives underway throughout the District, but this will be the first time all these initiatives are brought together to help shape DCPS’s next decade of action,” said Chancellor Kaya Henderson, DCPS. “The summit will give us the opportunity to hear from local stakeholders about the best ways to tackle major challenges facing our city and our school system.” Mayor Bowser said, “As Mayor of the nation’s capital, I know that DCPS is the place where our students learn and grow to become the next generation of leaders. Sustainability is a top priority for all of us in the District and we are thrilled to be hosting this event to make our schools and neighborhoods a model for the future. be359ba680
